Basic sample application circuit?

HI,

I'm trying to get a response from the 1863 control interface from an ESP32 talking SPI I get no response from the chip. I think I must be completely not understanding how to wire up this chip.

Currently I have IOVDD/AVDD/DVDD tied to 3.3v. AGND/GND are tied to GND. There is a 12mhz crystal on XO/Xi. M0 has a 10k pull-up to 3.3v. The SPI pines (MS/MC/MISO/MOSI) are connected to my micro-controller. SCLKI/BCLK/LRCLK/DOUT are all floating.

Is that a sane configuration?

Also,

(a) Are there any example basic application circuit for a PCM1863 being run by a general purpose microcontroller? Preferably with source code?

(b) Will the PCM1863 respond on SPI if nothing is connected to the I2S channel?

A : There is an example of how to setup the PCM1863 for SPI in the Datasheet section 10.1.1.2.1 Regarding source code, The default register configuration has the PCM1863 powered up and set to auto configuration mode, so depending on your ASI requirements, etc... you may not need to configure it at all.

I've hooked up an I2S Master at 24-bits, 48khz and connected 1 differential input to pins 1 (VIN1M) and 3 (VIN1P) but the samples coming back seem like loud noise. Also, I still cannot get any response on MISO from SPI. Thoughts on how I might debug? It seems like I must be missing something simple... At the very least, is there an address probe that's guaranteed to return something other than 0s?

For further testing, I purchased a PCM1863EVM and attached a Bus Pirate as follows

+5V -> BP's +5V (orange)
GND -> BP's GND (black)
J7 pin1 -> BP's 3.3V (red)
J7 pin3 -> BP's CLK (white)
J7 pin5 -> BP's MOSI (grey)
J7 pin7 -> BP's MISO (black)

I then configured BP with the following SPI settings

Speed: 125KHz
Clock polarity: Idle High
Output clock edge: Idle to Active
Input Sample Phase: middle
CS: /CS

which I believe matches the timing diagram in the PCM1863 manual. With this I'm still getting no response over SPI. I've sent a stream of 0x02 bytes, 0x03 bytes, alternating 0x02 0x00 and 0x03 0x01 patterns.

I've also tried it with MD0 tied to ground just incase the datasheet had the I2c vs SPI configuration backwards. I only read 0s back.
