TPA3255: Power supply transformer specs

Part Number: TPA3255

Hi all, we have been asked to set-up several audio amplifiers using the TPA3255. Just 2 short questions:

1. Which is the power, in VA, of the power supply transformer we should use, considering we have to supply the amps from the mains?

2. Do you suggest to add a slow turn-on of the power supply or is it not necessary? We have read there is a 250 ms of delay at the start.

Thank you very much in advance

   Milo

  • hello Milo,

how much power you plan to delivery and about load?

datasheet 11.2 have Powering Up timing requirements.

    regards

    Linda

  • Hi Linda,

we think to use not more than 100 W/channel in a BTL mode, so we'll have 2 channels. Our speakers have an 8 Ohm impedance. Apart the power of the transformer, which secondary AC voltage to you suggest for it? We are not forced to push the amp power supply to 53 V DC or around.

My best regards and thank you for spending your time

  • Hello Milo,

So if your design uses at most 100W/Channel we can provide the maximum amp load, however additional parameters related to the power supply design would have to be determined by the power supply designer.

You would need to deliver 15A to our device, we get this value from 5A peak current draw per channel, headroom, and other current draw from the TPA3255. We can provide information on our power consumption, max current draw you would need to provide, and our recommended operating conditions. How you provide that in your power supply design we cannot determine and would be up to whomever is designing your transformer/power supply.

    Best Regards,

    Luis
