TPA3129D2: PBTL Maximum output power

Part Number: TPA3129D2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3128D2

Hello expert,

My customer has question for TPA3129D2's maximum output power.

My understanding for the difference between TPA3128D2 and TPA3129D2 is only over current trip point by datasheet. And TPA3128D2 support 50W output.

So I guessed TPA3129D2 can achieve 50W output if it don't reach over current trip point. Is this correct?

Best regards,

  • Hi Kazuki,

TPA3128 can support 60W PBTL mode, TPA3129 can support 30W PBTL mode. TPA3129 can not support to 50W, since there will be OT fault.

    Derek,

    Regards

  • Derek-san,

Is OT fault meaning Over temperature fault?

I couldn't figure out the deference about package and Ron. Why do TPA3129D2 occur Over temperature fault?

If OT meaning is over temperature, can TPA3129D2 support 50W momentarily?

    Best regards,

  • Hi Kazuki,

The difference between TPA3128 and TPA3129 is the OC threshold. You can get the information from datasheet, 7.1 Overview

"It is integrated with 90-mΩ MOSFET that allows output currents up to 7.5 A for TPA3128D2 and 5.5 A for TPA3129D2."

So the TP3128 can support 60W for PBTL, but TP3129 can only support to 30W.

    Derek,

    Regards

  • Hi Derek,

If the reason of no support 50W output is only "over current", can TPA3129D2 support 50W output under 8ohm or greater load?
Datasheet's measurement condition is used 4 ohm load. And output current will reduce using 8ohm or greater load.

  • Hi Kazuki,

The key point is that does the customer has THD+N performance requirement. As you know, the outpower at 10% THD is big higher than 1% case.

And the thermal also affect the THD and outpower capacity.

My reply before is based on 1% THD case.

If customer has no THD and thermal requirement, I think TPA3129 supporting 50W is ok. But on 1% THD case, TPA3129 can not support 50W.

The below spec is test on THD=1% case:

    Supports Multiple Output Configurations
    – 2 × 30 W Into a 8-Ω BTL Load at 24 V
    (TPA3128D2)
    – 2 × 15 W Into a 8-Ω BTL Load at 15 V
    (TPA3129D2)

  • Hi Yanming-san

Thank you for your kindly explanation.

Would you provide the data of Ploss vs output power, idle current vs power supply voltage? TPA3129's datasheet don't has the typical characteristics graph of TPA3129. It only described about TPA3128. So my customer think about the deference between TPA3128 and TPA3129 is only Over current trip point.

Do you have any material of explaining about the deference between TPA3128 and TAP3129 except for Current limit. If it is describing about thermal performance, it is best for this time.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Kazuki,

TPA3128 and TPA3129 are same, except only the OC threshold.

So you can think that they are one device under same output power.

TPA3129 is cost down device for some customers, since it can not support high power on 1% THD case.

    Derek,

    Regards.

  • Hi Derek,

    I understand,

    Thank you and best regards,
