1. No there is no Checksum. You can read the registers back, but only if ADCs and DACs are powered down. take a look at THIS FAQ.
2. blank area for firmware version? the Processor you use will always need to program the AIC3254, the AIC3254 doesn't have any blank space for you to write a firmware version, but you could do this in the ram where you store your MiniDSP program. (the miniDSP must be programmed every time the device is powered up)

There is no checksum, and there is no checksum component. There is a checksum register in our newer devices, but none of the MiniDSP codecs have this.
