Apologies for an elementary question my work is typically all in the digital domain.

I need to provide microprocessor controlled muting for four channels of audio. The source audio is from MP3 players and I have no access to unamplified audio.

So, the question is: could the PGA 2311 handle volume control and muting of the audio signal out of a typical iPod or other portable MP3 player?

Rob,

No problem! Just be careful of one gotcha - if the output of your MP3 player exceeds the maximum input voltage rating of our part, you may damage the part. You should be able to find that voltage listed in the d/s.

Hi Rob,

I have a few PCBs where the PGA2311 seems to die over time.

The analog negative input rail is clamping at around -3.5V, but the positive analog rail and digital rails are fine at 5V.

Is this a signature of ESD damage, or some other failure mode?
