Audio Amplifier Audio Suggestion

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA6211A1, LM386, LM4951

Hi could someone kindly recommend a power audio amplifier with the following specifications?

  • 1W output power
  • Single ended output (not differential)
  • Battery Operation
  • 5V or 9V battery operated

I managed to find a handful of 1W output amplifiers however the differential output is not ideal for my application since I'd like one end of the speaker to be grounded.

    Unfortunately, we don't have an audio amplifier with a single-ended output that can reach the power that you are looking for. You would require a Class-AB amplifier with a minimum 4W output. In single-ended configuration, the output power is reduced 4 times the power of a differential configuration.

    The most approached device would be the TPA6211A1, which supports a Class-AB amplifier of 3.1W for a 4ohms load.

    I will have a look at the audio portfolio.

    1. Would you suggest using a TPA6211A1 and use only one of the outputs? Not sure if erroneous operation would occur if one of the outputs is left floating.
    2. Technically the LM386 is a Class AB amplifier which outputs a peak of 1W, however it has a single ended output. How come?
      1. In fact I was looking for alternative parts or similar to the LM386

    1. The TPA6211A1 can be used with only one output. The other one can be left floating as you mentioned. However, as I mentioned before, it can only reach a reduced power output, 4 times lower than the output power in differential configuration.

    2. The LM386 can reach a higher power depending of the package being used and the power supply level. The LM386N-4 is the package that can reach up to 1.6W. Please refer to the Figure 9 for details (please notice that the figures 7 and 8 correspond to other packages).

    Unfortunately, the alternative parts for the LM386 are not supported in single-ended mode. All of them have a different architecture like the LM4951.

    you are right. For my case it is not easy I think due to the low supply voltages.

    In order to better understand the limitations or capabilities of such power amplifiers. Technically all audio power amplifiers similar to the TPA6211A1 can be used in single ended mode if one end is left floating (whilst acknowledging the lower power output). In this case, did you suggest the TPA6211A1 for any particular reason?

    Unless the audio amplifier is of the Class-D architecture type, they can be used in single-ended mode. The Class-AB amplifier basically duplicates the output voltage swing with the help of two outputs.
