LM386: LM386 Alternatives or Replacements

Part Number: LM386
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA6211A1

So basically I want to use the LM386 in my design due to:

  1. its output power (max around 1W which is sufficient for my application)
  2. its single ended output - the speaker will be connected to the power amplifier at times and at times to another source so having one connection only to switch is a better option than having to switch two connections

Due to the LM386 being a not relatively new or recent part - are there other similar parts based on the above criteria which you'd suggest?

Thanks and regards

Luke

  • Hi, Luke,

You would require a Class-AB amplifier with a minimum 4W output. In single-ended configuration, the output power is reduced 4 times the power of a differential configuration.

The most approached device would be the TPA6211A1, which supports a Class-AB amplifier of 3.1W for a 4ohms load (around 750mW in single-ended mode).
