TLV320DAC3101: Thermal protection of speaker drivers

The Datasheet contains the following info:

The device has a thermal protection (OTP) feature for the speaker drivers which is always enabled to provide protection. If the device overheats, then the output stops switching. When the device cools down, the device resumes switching. An overtemperature status flag is provided as a read-only bit on page 0 / register 3, bit D1. The OTP feature is for self-protection of the device. If die temperature can be controlled at the system or board level, then overtemperature does not occur.

So question is at which temperature range the OTP kicks in / goes away?

Hi, Harald,

The lowest temperature at which the device overtemperature protection kicks in is 90°C. Additionally, the hysteresis is designed for ~20°C. So, the device would be resuming its normal operation at 70°C.

Is there a Temperature sensor in the IC which keeps track of Case Temperature?
Or it is managed on the basis of Junction Temperature internally?

Hi, Sheraz,

There's no internal temperature sensor. The values that I mentioned were obtained during a bench test under a temperature controlled environment. The case temperature was measured in this test.

Hi Luis,

As the junction to Case temperature is dependent on the Power dissipation of the IC, I believe that the turn off voltage for different use cases would be different.
For example, I am measuring the Turn off voltage as 102.5°C case Temperature in a temperature controlled environment.

Therefore to be able to calculate it correctly for my application, it would make sense to know the Junction temperature value.

The junction temperature value is 93°C typically (+/- 5% for min and max value).
