Hi, What is the difference between OPAMP and audio amplifier?

Hi, I wonder the difference between OPAMP and audio amplifier.

From what i studied, I think the main difference is that audio amplifier is capable of driving high current.

Also, audio amplifier is designed for frequency range of 20 to 20kHz.

Is there other key differences between two?

Also, is it correct if i say audio amplifier is one kind of OPAMP for special purpose?

Thanks,

Yun

  • Hi, Yun,

Yes, you are right. The OPAMP is an analog amplifier who requires of external components to determine the gain and frequency response. In case of an audio amplifier, as you correctly mentioned, they are used to handle high current for speaker or headphone loads. Its bandwidth is limited to the audible band 20Hz-20KHz. In some cases, they don't require external components to work.

Both devices share different architecture and this allows differences in current and bandwidth. Usually, the OPAMP is limited to 10KHz and high frequency content is not supported. In case of the audio amplifiers, there are different architectures such digital/analog input and output. So, they should be considered as different devices.

I hope this helps you. Please let me know if you have additional questions or comments.
