TLV320AIC3120: Is there a way to pass audio signal to both sides of an earphone?

Part Number: TLV320AIC3120

We have been using AIC3111 for testing and debugging but we also decided to have a look at the 3120. We found the 3120 has better class D gain so we started working on it.

We faced one issue regarding the headphone sound output. Since 3120 is mono channelled, the audio is coming in only one ear. In our application, the user will be listening using stereo headphones so we need stereo output.

We are going to try shorting L and R channels but it will probably reduce the power and volume of the sound. Is there another way, except using a class A/B amplifier, to make mono channel stereo without losing on amplitude?

  • Hi Souvik,

Thank you for the continued interest in TI's CODEC devices.

Could you share a little more information about what you're building with these CODECs?  You've asked a lot of questions in the past several months and if you let us know what you're trying to do maybe we can help you get there a little quicker than how it's been going so far.

  • Hey Collin,
I'm working on a project for college. My requirements are as follows -

    Input -
We are connecting an analog microphone across the MIC1LP and GND.

    Output-
We need both headphone and speaker output. For our application, we need only one speaker to function. But if the user chooses to use headphones, we need stereo channeled (or simply mono output on both ears).

We have been able to figure out a good filter design but we are having issues with the class D amplifier buzzing sound, which seems pretty constant. We tried suppressing it using a RC filter, but that is leading to attenuation of the sound. Hence, we were looking for a more powerful speaker and thought of testing out TLV320AIC3120. However, as mentioned in this thread, we have the issue of audio output on headphones being mono.

    1. Is there any solution to the Class D sound? (it is similar to sshhhhh sound) We are using the EVM for testing but our custom board uses the same schematics as the EVM.

    2. Is there an easy way to solve the headphone issue with 3120 i.e. playing output on both channels of headphones. We need to conserve design space and hence do not want to use an addition class A/B amplifier.

    Thanks,
    Souvik
