TPA3116D2: PBTL mode help please

Part Number: TPA3116D2

Hi Everybody , ı will appreciate your support on this, I am designing an amp using TPA3116D2  with BTL mode 2 x50 watt, With one switch i want to put the amp into PBTL mode to drive 70/100 Volt transformer  handling 100 Watt.

With this switch , i am grounding İnpL and InnL . I am appliying the analog signal only to Right Amp input . And shorting the OUTPR & OUTNR together with OUTPL & OUTNL respectively with a dpdt Relay.  Will shorting these pins while in BTL mode will trigger a fault in the circuit?

it s written that you need to power up the amp for PBTL operation,  can i activate the PBTL operation putting the amp to SDZ low and high again? i will apreciate if you have had such an experience before to comment on this?..

Thank you

  • Hello , I will appreciate if somebody can tell me if  i post to a wrong forum? How can  I get a TI engineer to answer my question? is there a direct mail so that i can ask my question there?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Ferhan,

I think how you are approaching this idea is correct. I would first set the device in shutdown mode then enable the changes to the outputs to switch between BTL and PBTL mode. You do carry some risk with the impedance of the switch creating a slight offset between the channels so that would be something you would have to verify on your end to make sure it doesn't create any issues.

Also I would check out this application report that discusses transformers in class-D amplifiers. http://www.ti.com/lit/an/sloa133/sloa133.pdf
