TAS5805MEVM: Card stops working very often. Why?

I have configured the board in dual mono mode. One is driving a woofer, the other a tweeter. Sometimes everything works fine, but it is very easy to get the card to stop working. This seems related to the output power. The higher the peaks are, the easier it is to get it to stop working. I am running it on a lab power supply of 20V 5A. The load is sometimes 4 ohm speakers and sometimes power resistors (8 ohm each with max 300W).

Is there anything that I should do to prevent this from happening?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Bjorn,

I wonder if the reason that the TAS5805M stops working is because the conditions are causing over temperature.

Could you please read the warning register (0x73) and see when the shutdown occurs if it is related to over temperature?

Hi,

No, I have just checked that. If I go into that register there are all zeroes in 0x73.

Is it possible to have positive figures in the EQ setting?

Hello Björn,

Thank you for sending me your settings, nothing really sticks out here, what is the normal output power?
Also what is your max output power in your application?

And just to clarify on my earlier question, when you check the fault register was that at the time of the when the EVM card stopped working?

We are running both amplifiers in mono driving a woofer and tweeter. It is a big loudspeaker so we are running it almost to the maximum power.

Yesterday I did some changes to the equalizer and that helped. I lowered both equalizer curves to maximum 0dB by setting a negative gain in each equalizer. I compensated the average loudness loss with extra gain in the DRC:s but I maintained the maximum levels. In this way I almost got what I needed.

I include my latest settings file. With this file I could run the loudspeakers with sinusoidal sweeps at maximum levels without any faults in the amplifier.

Now, unfortunately I burned the tweeter during a sinusoidal sweep, so right now I have to rebuild the loudspeaker, because I had only one.

What is the maximum power I can run these amplifiers in 4 ohm speakers? I cannot find the technical specs for that.EQ only negative gain + DRC+9-10dB + AGL ver6.zip

Hello Bjorn,

According to the datasheet for mono, this however is not for the PVDD of 20V that you have.

The first page says: " 45 W in Mono Mode (4-Ω, 21 V, THD+N=1%)"

So using these numbers I believe somewhere in the 40W range. From the analysis that you have done, it would seem that you are pushing both the TAS5805M and the speaker to none safe operating conditions, can you please measure the Vrms at the output so we may calculate what max output power you have.
