PCM2903C: 2018 Ipad Pro Compatibility

Part Number: PCM2903C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2904, PCM2912A

Hello,

We have a design where we need to use a 2018 Ipad Pro USB connection and use a DAC to get line out/headphone audio. Our initial prototype with a PCM2903C and PCM2904 works with the Ipad's Itunes, Youtube, and some various games.  We sucessfully get audio on headphones or an external speaker.

The problem arises when we try to use Skype, Facetime, or Cisco Webex.  In these cases the Ipad audio defaults to its own internal speakers.

1. Do you have any experience in using the PCM29XX or PCM27XX chips with a 2018 Ipad Pro or with these video call apps?

2. Do you think this may be an incompatibility with the ipads iOS itself, or something with just the Skype/Facetime/Webex apps?

3. Does TI have any alternative USB DAC parts that are known to work with the Iphone or Ipad facetime/skype/webex apps?

I appreciate any help you can provide.

Ben

  • Hello,

This is a pretty strange sounding one.

1.) No, we don't.  While the device remains popular and still functions on the modern platforms we hear customers working with, it was designed a bit before the iPads and modern video call apps so it was not tested for compatibility at the time of release.

2.)  This sounds like some internal routing is happening in the iPad that forces these video call apps to route to the internal circuits.  Does the headset output show up in these programs as an output option in addition to the internal speakers, or does it not get recognized by the tablet?

3.)  As mentioned above, these devices generally work with modern systems and I actually use one of these EVMs as my headphone driver on my work computer because it sounds better than the internal drivers :).  It's a Win10 PC and works with all apps, I know that's not the most helpful information for you but wanted to confirm that the device is still actively used successfully in other platforms and you may be able to get it to work with yours too.

  • Thanks for the quick response Collin!

Inside these specific video call apps, I don't even have an option to select "USB Audio Codec".  It is like the Ipad version of the apps doesn't recognize this part.  I do not have this issue on a windows 10 PC version of Webex. I can properly select the Codec as the audio output instead of the PC speakers.  My theory is that it is just and incompatibility within these specific Ipad apps.  The PCM Codec functions properly within the Zoom Ipad app.

Does TI have any newer parts besides the PCM29XX series that go directly from USB to headphone/line level audio that I could try with these Ipad apps?

  • Hello,

Thank you for the additional information, it does sound like something internal to the end product or application.

I believe the latest release in that family was the PCM2912A which could be an option, but it doesn't have quite the same configuration as the PCM2903C.

  • Thanks!

I will look into that part.

Are there any USB DAC alternatives to the PCM29XX or PCM27XX that TI produces?

    Ben

  • Hi Ben,

No, the devices in the PCM29xx and PCM27xx families are all that we have for this family of products.
