PGA as mic preamp

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA163, TLV320ADC6140

Hi TIs,

There is XLR mic in port on our design board. We want to record the analog mic level signal to PCM data.

Is it neccessary that use the specific mic preamp IC such as INA163 or PCM2505 before enter to ADC IC(ADC3101)?

PGA(programmable gain amplifier) range in audio ADC(ex. ADC3101) is up to 40dB.

Is it suitable for mic pre-amplifier or there is a noise issue?

XLR mic in -> INA163 -> ADC3101 or  XLR mic in -> ADC3101(PGA as preamp) which one is better?

Which would take into consideration?

Thanks

BR,

Steven

  • Hello Steven,

The system design method you choose will really depend on what type of input referred signals you're looking to acquire.  The SNR/DR of the ADC3101 is in the low 90's, so provided the microphone you're using has similar specifications it will likely work fine.  If you're looking for higher performance, instead of adding a discrete front-end amplification stage, consider using a higher performance Audio ADC such as the TLV320ADC6140 which has 113dB DR with DRE boosting up to 123dB.

We also have the PCM186x options which feature 2-channel variants in the >100dB spec ranges.
