TPA3136AD2: Can I use TPA3136 (inductorless amplifier) to drive a LONG speaker wire (20feet)?

Part Number: TPA3136AD2

The Application Report SLOA234A states that it can be used without an LC filter up to 1 meter long.   For my application one speaker has only 6" wires, while the other speaker could be 20 feet in length.   Does this mean that I can use ferrites for the short wires but must use an inductor / capacitor for the longer wires?

Is the use of an inductor acceptable?

  • Hi,

The main concern here is, longer wires behave as better antenna for radiated emission from EMC perspective. You will also get higher common-mode current on the loading wires in CEI test due to the more significant capacitive coupling between the loading wire and the earth. Using inductor+capacitor output filter can help on this, so LC filters are recommended for this case.

Another point is, the distributed inductance/resistance/capacitance of the long loading wires are not negligible. You need to pay attention to that.

    Thanks!

    Regards,

    Sam
