TLV320AIC3100: How to calculate power consumption

Part Number: TLV320AIC3100

Hi,

I want to know how can I calculate the power consumption of HVDD,SPKVDD AND DVDD.

  • Hello,

The DVDD currents are mostly a DC power consumption so you'll multiply your DVDD supply voltage by the measured DVDD current consumption (P=V*I).

The HVDD and SPKVDD both have DC quiescent components associated with them, but this is usually small compared with the RMS power they're delivering to their loads. Calculate the RMS power for these supplies based on the RMS output voltage and output loading.  (P =(V^2)/R).  For peak instantaneous power it's usually recommended to measure the instantaneous current delivered to the loads using a current meter probe for and oscilloscope (P= (I^2)*R).

  • For HPVDD how can I measure resistance.

Currently we are in design phase we are not testing it.So how can I find Current consumption HPVDD both are unknown resistor and current. Or is there is any method to find it's resistor.

  • Hello,

HPVDD powers the headphone drivers and also the PLL.  Therefore you need to measure the static power-consumption of just the PLL with the headphones driving nothing/muted, you can use a multi-meter for this measurement.  Power_PLL_HPVDD = HPVDD_Voltage * HPVDD_Current.

Then measure the dynamic RMS output voltage being delivered to the headphone loads in full operation and calculate the additional RMS power based on the voltage across the headphones and their impedance, which will be provided by the headphone vendors.

  • Ya headphone s data I can  get from vendor datasheet.

But PLL Current how can I measure theoretical?

  • Hello,

You can measure the current flowing into the HPVDD pin with a digital multi-meter.  If you're unable to measure it, then you'll need to rely on the information provided in the datasheet and related power-consumption app notes for the best estimate based on your PLL configurations.

  • Hello,

Please take a look at the following application note that provides some power consumption for different use cases.

    Regards,

    Aaron
