TLV320DAC3203: For loudspeaker application

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Our customer is looking for a Class D amplifier capable of supporting an 80mW speaker. However the lowest power rating for Class D that TI can offer is up to 1W only. 1W could overdrive his speaker.

So he is considering to use TLV320DAC3203 with output power rating of 47mW. However this is listed for Headphone amplification and his application is towards loudspeaker. Is it okay to use this?

Hi Art,

I would like to ask a couple things about customer application:

Do you need digital a input amplifier?
What is the speaker impedance?

You can consider other Class-D drivers, the gain can be reduced, or it can even be set as attenuation instead of gain so that the output does not go too high in power.

Good day.

Apologies for the delayed response. It took some time for the customer to get back to me for some reasons but he mentioned he is still interested on this. Below are his response to the questions below:

(1) Do you need digital a input amplifier? --> he will not be needing any digital components as his design should be purely analog, from the mic to the speaker.
(2) What is the speaker impedance? --> 32 ohms

Art,

Customer could consider TPA2005D1 that comes in three different packages so it's flexible for different applications.

This amplifier is rated for 4 and 8 ohms so actually output power would be reduced for higher impedance loads like 32, you should also consider the supply voltage.
This device has PSpice and TINA models available if you want to simulate any specific use case.

Hello,

I am the customer that Art was helping, I am very grateful for his help. It is so great to talk to you Ivan, I managed to find a speaker that matches the 8 ohm resistance that correlates with the rating of the class-D amplifier. Is there anyway we could speaker over the phone or in a chat lobby or is this the best way we can speak?
