PCM2912A: PCM2912A Sidetone Delay

Part Number: PCM2912A

I am using the PCM2912A in one of our products and a customer has brought it to my attention that there is a significant delay when sidetone is enabled.  The delay is long enough to create issues speaking and makes the headset unusable.

I have tested this in both Windows 10 through the mixer as well as through Adobe Audition on macOS with the same results.

What can I do to fix this?

  • Hey Brandon,

How much delay are you seeing? Have you been able to measure this or just based on listening tests? I will try to reproduce this on my end as well.

  • Zak,

    I measured it at 66ms.

  • Hey Brandon,

How are you testing this? I'm struggling to find a good way to measure this myself. I have enabled the mic playback in Windows, and while there is a very slight delay as to be expected, it seems to operate as intended and I would not say that the delay is significant enough to impede my ability to have a conversation.

  • Zak,

I have a HATS with artificial voice and ears, I am using a signal generator to create a 1k burst tone with a 500ms gap between tones, sending it to the HATS voice box and my oscilloscope simultaneously.  I have the second channel of my oscilloscope connected to the output of the artificial ears and am measuring the delay between the burst output and return.

My customer brought this to my attention as he is unable to use the product with the sidetone enabled.  I have tested this myself on a Win10, Win7, and macOS system all with same results.  While the delay is not extreme, it does fall into the range that makes continuous speech difficult or impossible.  The customer tells me he has another USB headset that does not have the issue, though I have been unable to independently verify that.

This product has been a very small part of line, but I am looking to push hard into the PC gaming market in the coming months.  This type of delay would be unacceptable for gaming and I need to find the source and get it fixed before I start marketing.

I appreciate your effort in helping my try to figure this out.

  • I should add that I use exactly the same setup for TSO certification testing of our aviation products in which I measure a 0.68mS delay.

  • Hey Brandon,

Is the PCM2912A used in your aviation products that have significantly lower delay? At first I was inclined to think this delay might be on the driver side, but testing in multiple systems seems to have most likely ruled that out if the results are consistent. The only controls for the sidetone are the volume and mute functions, so unfortunately I don't believe there is a way to reduce this delay time unless the delay is a result of external filtering you are doing on the input and output.
