PCMD3180: PCMD3180 inputs (rudimentary question)

Part Number: PCMD3180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320ADC6140, PCM4222, PCM1840, PCM4220

Hello

My apologies for posting such a rudimentary question.

I'm spec'ing parts for a professional audio AD converter design.  I was planning to use AKM's 5397.  Due to bizarre circumstances this part is currently NA.  AKM has recommended the PCMD3180 instead.

PCMD3180 seems to be designed for MEMS or DPM applications?  There are no analog input pins that I can see, only GPIO pins for digital programmable microphones.  My assumption is that this part would not work in my application, Is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello,

Yes, big happenings in the Audio supplier market due to the disruption.

The proper TI cross for the AK5394 which is a high-end stereo hardware controlled ADC is the PCM4220, PCM4222 or newer TLV320ADC6140 (SW control) and PCM1840 (HW control) family.

The PCM4220/22 are the closest fits from an analog performance standpoint and achieve the listed Dynamic Range performance with an all-analog path similar to the AK device.  The very popular TLV320ADC6140 and PCM1840 devices can achieve 123dB DR from a 113dB analog core using an effective Dynamic Range Extension algorithm.

  • Thank you Collin, very much appreciated.  This confirms what I suspected about the PCMD3180.
