TLV320DAC3101: Power Up Sequence

Guru 11170 points
Part Number: TLV320DAC3101

Hello E2E,

The TLV320DAC3101 has a power sequencing regulation from the Rev-B data sheet.
However, that doesn't match past E2E answer.

1: Which is correct about power up sequense, Rev-A or Rev-B?
2: Is the above E2E answer correct?
3: What is the reason added power up sequence on Rev-B datasheet?
4: What are the risks of not complying with the Rev-B power-up sequence?

Best regards,

  • Hi, ACGUY,

It is important to understand that the TLV320 family power sequence can be flexible. These devices are not sensitive to power sequence changes.

However, we recommend this sequence in order to ensure that the registers map will be fully initialized. Even if this sequence is followed or not, we recommend to perform a hardware and software reset at the device boot up. This practice ensures that all the digital and analog blocks will be properly powered up independently of the power supplies.

Please let me know if you have additional questions or comments.

    Best regards,
    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.

  • Hello Ruis,

    Thank you for reply.
Our customer has concern that the device is broken often at test phase before shipping.
Currently, SPxx (out) and SPx VDD (power) failures frequently occur in shipping tests.
The customer's product is not complying with the Rev-B power-up sequence. I think that's the cause.

Please let me know your opinion.

    Best regards,
    ACGUY

  • Hi, ACGUY,

I haven't seen cases where the device is damaged or the speaker output fails due to the power sequence. The most common failure cases are related to a constant exposure to overcurrent issues due to a output short circuit or a low load.

  • Hi Luis,

    >> I haven't seen cases where the device is damaged or the speaker output fails due to the power sequence.

Why does TI added power up sequence on rev_B datasheet?

    Best regards,
    ACGUY

  • Hi, ACGUY,

This particular sequence is recommended just to ensure that the registers are completely initialized. There were some particular cases in the past where some users were not able to perform hardware + software reset. This sequence helped to initialize the registers.

However, in order to ensure a full registers initialization, we recommend to perform a hardware + software reset even if they are using this power up sequence.
