TLV320ADC5140: audio ADC: performance clarification.

Part Number: TLV320ADC5140
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320ADC6140, PCM4204

Hi, i have to replace ADC AK5554 after AKM factory fire. it is a 115dB-SNR 4-channel pro-audio ADC.

I am thinking to redesign my board with TLV320ADC5140, this seems to have good performances (120dB-SNR, 4 channels) but particularly focused on microphone systems.

I am designing a guitar effect processor, can this product be good for me or should i consider other?

it is a 108dB-SNR, 120dB with DRE, should i trust about DRE in a non-voice application?

Thank you,

Michele

  • Hello Michele,

Against the AK5554 we usually recommend the TLV320ADC6140, which is the 113dB, 123dB DRE boosted ADC in the same family as the ADC5140 that you found.  The device supports two-channel summing mode which will increase the dynamic range to 116dB.

The PCM4204 is another popular higher-end ADC for these applications, but has much less features than the ADC6140 offers.

In the end both are popular, have great sound quality, are regularly used with musical instruments, and in the end the final choice will be up to you.
