TLV320DAC3100: P2P replacement with TLV320DAC3101 - any PCB modifications needed

Part Number: TLV320DAC3100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320DAC3101, TLV320DAC3120

My customer currently uses the TLV320DAC3100 in the circuit. If replacing it with the TLV320DAC3101 in the same PCB, will any issues occur? The main concern is with the speaker connections; DAC3100 has SPKP and SPKM combined with two pins each. If using the DAC3101 in the same PCB, SPLP will be connected to SPRP and SPLM will be connected to SPRM. Any risks or concerns with this connection or any other I may have missed?

  • Hi Lenio,

As you mentioned the difference between these devices is the speaker output connection.

Even if you enable both speaker channels on TLV320DAC3101, and send the same data to both channels, some mismatch may happen. It may work but not sure of its reliability. It is not recommended to short speaker outputs to each other.

  • What are the options? Can we disable one of the channels so we can have them connected? This is a temporary fix, so if we have alternatives to use the DAC3101 in the same PCB, I'd like to explore them. We need to understand the options and the compromises to performance, if they exist.

  • Hi Lenio,

I'll test the alternative of shorting the outputs while keeping one of them disabled.

Is customer using HPL and HPR? Perhaps TLV320DAC3120 can be another option.

  • Yes, the customer is using the two channels. As for DAC3120, are there any limitations involved?

  • Hi Lenio,

I have tested a short between SPLP to SPRP and SPLM to SPRM on TLV320DAC3101EVM. There seems to be no problem shorting these as long as one of the channels is shutdown. Make sure to set the power register bit to 0 so that the driver is disabled. Shorting them while both drivers are enabled would cause the device to trigger protection and getting shutdown.

Regarding TLV320DAC3120, it is the same Class-D driver as TLV320DAC3100, but it is a mono DAC so there is only one HP output, not stereo.
