USB to Audio - single chip solution

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C6747

Hi,

First I hope I am in the right forum - if not please let me know.

I have a customer who wants something that meets the requirements below. I've looked the TUSB3200 but it's not quite there. Do you have anything that would be closer?

The customer makes professional and mass market radios, boomboxes, etc

"I also just got word that we're thinking about adding a feature where the user plugs in a USB thumb drive into our product and audio files are played from it. Doing this ourselves is a little daunting -- we'd need USB mass storage reading support, parsing through directories looking at file-types, decoding different types of compressed audio files, and then streaming digital audio to a DAC. This would require a more powerful MCU/MPU, along with I2S. However, based on the many low-cost products on the market that do this (like karaoke machines), there must be pre-packaged solutions that do exactly this, maybe with just a serial interface for control and a digital audio interface. Do you guys know of any solutions?

There must be several single chip solutions that do this – USB thumb drives are popular in some pretty low-end car stereos and karaoke machines. Rohm makes a single chip solution (summary attached)."

Cheers

  • Hi, Calum,

As far as I know, we don't have a part that only does this. We have the ability, but it's bundled with other functionality as well (basically Aureus™).

I am going to move this post to the audio forum, more groups monitor that forum than the audio converter forum.

  • Calum,

The TUSB3200A could not be used in this application, since the TUSB3200A provides only a USB device-side implementation, not a host-side implementation.  USB thumb drives are USB devices, and USB only connects a host to multiple devices, not two devices to each other.

The TMS320DA8xx provides a host-side USB implementation, and the uSDK provides USB connectivity to both iPods and MSC drives.

  • Calum,

The TMS320DA8xx devices will be able to support the functions the customer needs.  These are more MCU/MPU alike devices, probably not the simple devices you mentioned.  The devices are not published on ti.com, you may take a look at the similar devices like TMS320C6747,  http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tms320c6747.html.

Hi,Li Zhang,as you mentioned above,i found all Ti's Aureus™ devices not published on ti.com,and can you tell me why?

I try my best to find the information about Aureus™ devices ,and now i am studing a product on hand that used DA788 solution ,

can you help me how to get the data of Aureus™ devices ?both the hardware&software develop informations!

    thanks!

  • Hi Jinhui, these devices are restricted so they are not published on ti.com.  Unlike typical TI catalog devices, there are some license requirements for using the devices, often some third-party licenses needed.  --- Li Zhang
