PCM3168A: Mono or stereo support

Hi,

I am planning to use PCM3168APAP for my Mono Audio In and output interface. Can you confirm whether the IC supports Mono or stereo audio interface.

    Hi Shifali,

    PCM3168A is a 6in/8out device. You could only use one of each channels, but this would really underutilize the device. Can I ask why you are considering this device over some of our stereo codecs? All of our devices support I2S, TDM, LJ, RJ formats.

    1. I am looking for Mono supported I2S codec. Does the IC support Mono.

    2. ''You could only use one of each channels''. By this statement do you mean that either only 1 input or 1 output can be used at a time?

    Hi Shifali,

    I2S is by definition a stereo protocol, but you could always choose to only use one of the channels for mono audio. If you want a codec that only has one channel, then you might consider TLV320AIC3109-Q1 instead. If you don't want the automotive rating then you could use any of the codecs in the portfolio and only use one of the ADCs. I would not use PCM3168A though because it sounds like this would be way more than you need.

    Hi Zak,

    I have a requirement for  6 Audio Input and 4 Audio Output interface. Since PCM3168A can support 6 audio input and 8 audio outputs I think this IC is a better choice. 

    Do you have any suggestion for this.

    Hi Shifali,

    That makes more sense, if you need 6in/4out then PCM3168A is the right choice. Mono means single channel, which is why I was confused.

    Hi Zak,

    Thank you for your response.

    Can you please suggest a level translator than can be used for I2S interfaces. It should be capable to support 3.3V to 1.8V conversion

    Hey Shifali,

    We use SN74AVC4T774RSVR on the motherboard for our EVMs and it works perfectly for the I2S interface!

    Thankyou for you response.

    Can you please confirm below queries:

    1.  What is the trace impedance at which the input and output differential signals should be routed? 100ohm,90ohm or any other.

    2. LRCK and BC are input to the IC. Or are they bidirectional signals.

    Hey Shifali,

    There aren't strict trace impedance requirements for these signals as they are low frequency. Just make sure to route them as differential signals and try to keep the traces away from power supply switch nodes or digital lines.

    LRCK and BCK can be either inputs or outputs depending on if the device is configured in master or slave mode.
