ADS1218: Source code for ADS121x driver, where I can get DCPFREETOOL

Part Number: ADS1218
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1217, ADS1216, ADS124S08, ADS1261

Dear TI Support,

For a project I need to use ADS1217 or 18 and because the time is so limited I am looking for an example for its driver in c.

I found that you have or had a tool for using with CCS called DCPFREETOOL, but I have not managed to find how to get it.

There is no download link on this link https://www.ti.com/tool/DCPFREETOOL#downloads

and I donæt know if it is somewhere in CCs.

Could you please help me?

Any source code is also useful, also if you have any evaluation kit for ADS1216, 17 or 18 is useful for me.

Best regards,

Mostafa

  • Hi Mostafa,

I'm not sure why the tools page is still on ti.com.  I can't download the software either even on our internal systems.  This is very old software designed to work with CCS version 3 and now the current CCS version is 10.  Also, it only worked with certain DSPs.

The ADS121x devices are about 20 years old, and the original EVMs used a software GUI and a PC parallel port to communicate to the device ( a sort of bit-banged approach).  The EVMs were made obsolete when parallel ports were no longer standard on PCs.  This code would not have been very useful to you either.

We were about to update the EVMs to a newer platform, but before they could be released that hardware/software platform was also made obsolete.  As you might understand, resourcing is limited for writing example code and our newer and more complex devices take priority over 20 year old devices.  In other words, it is way down in the queue.

I would be glad to help you with any issues you might encounter, but unfortunately we do not have any starter or example code for these devices at this time.

  • Hi Bob,

Thanks for your information, I have one more question:

We are designing a new product (high precision DAQ) and beacuse of that I was thinking about ADS1217-8 .

Most of our input signals are 0-20mA and +/- 50mV signals. Do you suggest to use ADS124S08 instead of ADS1217?

The maximum final sampling rate after digital filtering is 10 SPS and we need 8 channels at least.

    Thanks for advice in advance.

    Best regards,

    Mostafa

  • Hi Mostafa,

Sorry for the delayed response.  Yes, the ADS124S08 would be a good choice.  You may also consider the ADS1261.

    Best regards,

    Bob B

  • Thanks a lot Bob.
