ADS7038-Q1: ASIL C implementation

Part Number: ADS7038-Q1

Hi Team,

Does the ADS7038-Q1 has internal safety measures to achieve ASIL C FIT rate or does it need any measures to be taken at system level to meet the ASIL C?

If additional safety measures are needed, are there any other ADCs with internal safety measures.

Regards,

Alen

  • Hi Alen,

while the ADS7038-Q1 integrates some diagnostic features that can be useful for detecting random hardware faults, it was not developed according to TI's process for the development of functional safe hardware. That means the customer has to evaluate the hardware element for its suitability in his functional safety (FS) application according to ISO 26262:8, 13. The device would be classified as a Class II or III hardware element depending on the interpretation of the standard. We can certainly support the customer during this evaluation.

What we are working on right now is to put the basic functional safety information for ADS7038-Q1 together, such as FS FIT (Failure in time) rate, FMD (Failure Mode Distribution) and Pin FMA (Failure Mode Analysis). This will be required as part of the evaluation of the hardware element.

We have some ideas put together in a presentation which outline how the various features of the device could be used as SM (Safety Mechanisms) to detect certain random hardware faults. But it would be up to the customer to decide if and how he wants to use them and what DC (Diagnostic Coverage) to assign to them.
Details such as DC, FMEDA, and a Safety Manual would only be available for FS Quality-Managed or FS-Compliant products from TI according to the FS device categorization which you can find on our FS landing page.

Unfortunately we don't have any FS Quality-Managed or FS-Compliant ADC available to date. That means we don't have any ADC available for which we could claim they meet ASIL C metrics by themselves.
But if you are looking for a 12-bit, SPI ADC then ADS7038-Q1 is the closest we have today.

  • Hi Joachim,

    Thank you for great explanation!

Could you please share the documents mentioned below for the part ADS7038-Q1.

FS FIT (Failure in time) rate, FMD (Failure Mode Distribution) and Pin FMA (Failure Mode Analysis)

    Thanks and best,

    Alen

  • Hi Alen,

The functional safety-capable documents for the ADS7038-Q1 are not published yet. We expect to have the FIT rate, FMD and pin FMA available by end of July.
