DAC81408EVM: control with USB2ANY not working

Part Number: DAC81408EVM

Hello,

I'm trying to control the DAV81408EVM with USB2ANY interface adapter and GUI from DAC81408EVM software downloaded for the TI website.

The connection is established, it seems that commands are sent and written (I can see register change when I read it) but there is no change at the DAC outputs.

I use internal 2.5 V reference, Supplying the board with VDD/VAA = 5 V, VCC = 12 V VSS = -12 V and VIO = 3.3V (supplied from the USB2ANY adapter)

Can someone help me with this?

Regards,

Dragan

  • Hi,

What is the current limit set on the VCC/VSS power supply? set min 100mA supply current from power supply.

    Please do the steps below.

    1. Make sure the jumper settings are follows ( by default it should be like this, but please double check)

    Jumper

    Default Position

    J2

    Open: /RESET deactivated

    J3

    Open: /CLR deactivated

    J9

    Closed: GND

    J10

    1-2: USB2ANY 3.3V on J8.5

    J11

    1-2: VREF from REF5025

    J12

    2-3: VSS on J7.2

    2.  Set the current limit for +/12V min 100mA, 5V current limit as 50mA(min)

    3. Naviage to the “Low Level Configuration” Page of the GUI and press the “Read All” button.

    4. Verify that the “DEVICE_ID” register reads as “0x29C0"

    5. Next click on the “DAC81408 Page

    6. Click on the DEV PWRDWN button ( Which will bring the DAC81408 ou of power down state)

    7. Click on all DAC ON/OFF buttons ( All DAC channels will be powered up, if you want you can enable CH1 alone )

    8. Next write DAC_DATA in channels

Let me know if you need further help.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for your reply

I checked the current at the VDD/VAA and it is way to high (few hundreds mA) if not constrained.

Currents at VCC and VSS were 0 A, USB2ANY still got connected, DEVICE_ID was filled with zeros.

So it seems the DAC is damaged since REF5025 has 2.5 V at the output or is there anything else that could go wrong?

It is a bit strange since board came straight form the box, handled with ESD  strap and none of the voltages was exceeded.

    Dragan

  • Hi,

Earlier you said, register read/write was working? Can you clarify the same.

Also please make sure all the supplies are reaching DAC ( Probe near to DAC).

VCC/VSS current = 0mA means DAC is not yet powered up. Can you post screenshot fo the GUI while connected to EVM?

    AK

  • Hello,

I have noticed that if I change something in the GUI (high level configuration) and the I read the registers in the low level configuration window I can see that registers have changed accordingly. But maybe that doesn't mean that the read was really successful?

    I have checked all probes and all the voltages are reaching the probes. (TP3 = 5 V, TP4 = 5 V, TP11 = 12 V, TP12 = 2.5 V, TP13 = -12 V)

    The screenshots are attached below.

    Thank you for your help,

    Dragan

  • Hi,

Can you please check DEVICE_ID register? Also I can see from the screenshot DEV_PWDWN register is  0xFFFF which means DAC is in powered down state. Can you write 0x0000? Smilarly in SPICONFIG register write 0x0A84

GENCONFIG register write 0x7F00 ( Whihc is the default state). Read back all these registers after you write ino those to make sure that write happened.

If thats not reading properly, I have suspicion that device might have damaged due to ESD or something else happening with GUI.

I don't have access to EVM right now as we are working from home now.

  • Hello,

The device was damaged. We got the replacement and it replacement device works finer.

    Thank you for your help.
