Any Process for SHUNT Calibration and AUTO-CAL for ADS1230

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1230

I am using ADS1230 for a weighing scale instrument.

Now the industry demands SHUNT Calibration as because High Capacity load cells cannot be calibrated using known load. Some of the basic queries I am having is:

1. What is the Minimum load required to Calibrate the system.

2. If a known mass load is not available, is there any way out to calibrate the system using SHUNT resistances?

3. I have seen some instruments, where the user just needs to input the mV/V value of the Loadcell and the Full Scale Value, and the Instrument starts displaying the Load Value with an accuracy of +/- 2%

Please advice!

  • Hi Saumya,

Welcome to the e2e forums!  We normally entertain questions specific to the operation of the actual data converter, in this case the ADS1230, rather than the end system.  Since each end product the ADS1230 goes into is unique, we don't always have all the answers to help you reach your end goal.  Your weigh scale instrument, depending on its intended use, most likely has some sort of regulatory agency requirement for determining the minimum load during calibration.  For specific answers on questions 1 and 2 above you would have to review the applicable standards/requirements associated with the end equipment.

For general knowledge regarding shunt resistors and how they play a role in calibrating strain gages, here's a link to a useful website that may shed some light on using shunts depending on the type of strain gage you have:

The ADS1230 in and of itself, does not require a minimum load or known mass to run a calibration routine.  We often use a Load Cell Simulator like the PVS-10 from Load Cell Central in our lab during development and debug of evaluation modules like the ADS1230REF.  Hopefully you'll find some of this information useful.
