ADS1258: Trying to qualify a crystal

Genius 9880 points
Part Number: ADS1258

Hi,

Customer is trying to qualify a crystal unit for this component and was wondering if TI can provide some additional information on the crystal unit requirements.

Is there a frequency tolerance range that is required for this component? Customer noticed that there are a few "approved crystals" listed in the datasheet, is it a requirement to use these specific crystals?

Regards,
Maynard

  • Hi Maynard,

In fact, I would not recommend using a crystal at all with the ADS1258. The 32 kHz watch crystals required by the ADS1258 can be challenging to get consistent results. If you look to the right of this post, you can see many questions related to crystal problems with the ADS1258 - I have included a screenshot below just in case you are seeing something different. Please suggest to the customer to read these posts before committing to using a crystal. If they still want to use a crystal, they can look at the current BOM of the ADS1258EVM for the crystal used with this board as a reference.

However, I would strongly suggest they consider a discrete clock oscillator instead of a crystal. The crystal problems can result from a variety of factors, and there is no single solution that guarantees results i.e. what works for some engineers does not work for others, and vice versa.
