Dear TI design support,

I am searching a DAC to generate a number of voltage levels in the range 0V-1.5V. I came across DACs offered by TI. For instance DAC5311-Q1 could be a converter I might use. This converter obviously has a SPI interface. If I use this converter, can we get FPGA code (VHDL) for the SPI which then will be downloaded. I mean some basic code to interact with the DAC through SPI.

Is there any example code maybe your customers used? Could you please tell me if there may be DAC that could suit me better and the interfacing is probably easier?

Hi Olonbayar,

We don't have any VHDL example code for SPI. I think you can search for examples online for creating a SPI controller with VHDL. We can help you figure out the instructions you will need to write to the DAC.

We have other devices with I2C interfaces if that would be easier for you.

The simplest interface is a parallel interface, you can control each data bit directly with a GPIO voltage. They vary from 8 to 16 bits. The DAC5311 you chose is an 8 bit DAC.

Hi Katlynne,

Thanks for your replies. It was very useful. The DAC5311 has one output. Is there DAC that contains four such DAC5311 as I need to get four or even more different voltages at the same time? Simpler DACs with GPIO output you suggested to me has quad variants. It will be great if there is such quad DAC5311 or similar ones to it.

Yes, we have DACs similar to the DAC5311 with more than one output. Why did you choose the DAC5311? What specs are you looking for? SPI and 8-bits? I am thinking to use DAC088S085CIMT as listed in the link you provided. My spec is as follows.

The DAC should provide voltages in the range 0-1 V with steps 64, 256 can even be 1024. The resolution can therefore be 8 or higher. It also needs to have 8 different outputs and they should be set simultaneously and individually. It can have SPI interface or GPIO is also fine. Would be great if you can suggest me some other DACs that I can suit me better.

Hi Olonbayar,

The DAC088S085 is a good option. I will mention the TLV5632 is another option with an internal reference. The TLV5632 has a 1V or 2V internal reference option, or external reference option. The 1 V internal reference would be ideal for your 0-1V range. You will get the full use out of the 8-bits (256 steps).

It looks like the DAC088S085 has slightly better accuracy specifications, but you'd need to apply the 1V reference externally.
