8 Channels and two DACs for Xilinx ZC702 FPGA

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC34H84

Hello everyone,

I have a Xilinx ZC702 FPGA with two LPC FMC connectors, I'm looking to attach two DAC's for a total of eight outputs. I'm looking to produce waveforms from 10 kHz - 200 MHz. I'm currently looking into utilizing two DAC34H84EVM with two TSW14J10EVM with the ZC702 and the respective FMC-DAC-ADAPTER.

I have two questions, does this seem feasible to perform on such an FPGA, two DAC's? More so, If I were to utilize the DACs through Xilinx Vivado, would I face issues?  Also, if I have two TSW14J10EVM, is there anyway the GPU can sync two separate DAC boards?

My apologies for such basic questions, I am new to the world of hardware engineering and DAC's, but my research has led me here.

Thank you!

  • Dimitri,

You will not be able to install both DAC boards at the same time as there will be  a physical interface issue. See attached photo of the DAC EVM.

The TSW14J10EVM will not work with this setup as many of the required traces are not routed on this board. This board was designed to be used with the TI JESD204 DAC EVM's, not the LVDS boards.

If you use a FMC-FMC riser, you may be able to attach both boards. This would have to be tested. Using the riser with the required FMC-DAC-Adapter may cause some signal integrity issues.

Regarding issues with interfacing two of these DAC's with the FPGA, I would not think this would be an issue. I would consult with Xilinx though to get their opinion.  I have also attached an app note regarding synchronizing multiple DAC34H84 devices.

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you for your response. Is it well known for there to be signal integrity issues with an FMC-FMC riser?

I've found out that the ZC702 won't work due to LPC FMC connectors, hence we're looking at purchasing an Xilinx VC707 which has two HPC FMC connectors. In your professional opinion, if I wanted to utilize a DAC to produce eight unique waveforms of  10kHz to 200 MHz that can be utilized with an Xilinx FMC connector, what DAC would you choose? I've looked into the JESD204 DAC's, but it seems they cannot go below a certain threshold of certain MHz.

    Thank you!

  • Dimitri,

You are correct about the JESD DAC's. The serdes PLL used by these parts have a minimum frequency requirement which prevents these parts from operating at low sample rates. I would suggest you stick with the DAC34H84 devices for your application. If you plan on using the EVM, you may need to replace the transformers as they are rated from 2M to 775M (ADT4-1WT) and 4.5M to 3G (ETC1-1-13).

    Regards,

    Jim
