ADS131M04: design advice

Part Number: ADS131M04
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS131A02, , ADS122C04, ADS1234

Dear Madam/Sir,

We are designing a weight measurement system with the bridge structure.  In application they all for load cell applications but all have multiplexer.

We need to use 4 individual load cell in a weight scale app and need to be get data as fast as accurate as possible. Application is battery operated and power consumption is also important!

You have  simultaneous solution as below;

ADS131a02,

ADS131m04

But it seems that all have designed for other applications

Are the not intended to be used Wheatstone Bridge Load Cell applications ?

Should we use a dedicated product such as ADS1234, ADS122C04?Or we can use them ???

  • Hi User,

    Typically a bridge measurement is performed ratiometrically, such that the bridge excitation voltage is also used as the ADC's reference voltage. This helps reduce noise and drift effects of the excitation voltage.

    Moreover, the output signals from a typical bridge are relatively small (10s of millivolts), so you also need a gain stage to lower the noise and improve dynamic range.

    Given this information, the A02 and M04 are not the best solutions because the A02 does not have an integrated gain stage and the M04 cannot use external reference inputs. Moreover, the M0x devices have limited input range which is not ideal for bridge measurements.

    How fast do you need to sample all 4 load cells? And what is the noise target of your system?
