3 questions regarding ADS1232 REF

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1232, ADS1232REF, TUSB3410, ISO721

Hi,

We use four ADS1232 boards connected to a PC sampling load cell values using the stream function (in high speed mode, command: 'rf').

There are three problems that I'm facing:

#1 We run Win7 and a stand-alone software running four threads which continously acquires data from each board. The software however crash after what it seems random time. A blue screen is shown displaying: "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". When analyzing the blue screen log it says that the error was traced to "umpusbvista.sys".

# 2 When I try to install the USB-COMport drivers on a WinXP machine then only two of the boards are found in the device manager. The error is that the two first boards are "overwritten" by the last two boards connected.

# 3 The boards reboots when an external DC-adapter is connected to the same power-jack as the boards. (this only happens when an USB-cable is connected to the board and when there is no connection in the other end which is kind of wierd). We solve this by reconnecting using our software but still the sensitivity is present.

I would be grateful if there is anyone who could guide me in the right path to solve these issues. The most immediate are #1 and #2.

Settings: Mode=Analysis, Vref=+5VA, ProgMode=JTAG. The drivers I use is the latest from TI.com (swrc094f.zip)

Thanks!

Best regards,

/Jens Lundstrom

  • Jens,

Unfortunately the ADS1232REF board has not been qualified to run on Windows 7.  I'm not sure what you are using for the driver.  If you are using the driver that was part of the installation program for the ADS1232REF, you may have an older TUSB3410 COM driver that may have issues with Windows 7.  You might try downloading and installing the latest driver at:

    http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/tusbwinvcp.html

One note about the driver installation.  Usually you need to run the installer twice.  The first time it is run it removes the previous installation.

You are using the ADS1232REF beyond the scope to which it was intended.  I do believe that the driver should be able to handle more than two ports on XP.  Perhaps updating the driver on the XP machine may be a good idea too.  As the ADS1232REF is considered a COM serial device, you can reassign the values in device manager to any open COM ports.  Each time you plug into a USB port, the driver should automatically load and assign a new COM port to that USB port.  If the same COM port is connected more than once, I would try to manually reassign the COM port.

As far as point three is concerned, I have recently observed a weird behaviour relative to an external supply and USB that reboots the board.  I have not seen this in our lab, but I have seen it at my home.  I believe it has something to do with floating grounds on the USB side that affect the supply.  The ISO721 isolator is to prevent that condition, but I will need to do some more investigation on that to see what may be going on.  I will respond to this post when I have something more definitive.

  • Hello Bob,

Thank you for your rapid response.

I did as you wrote, I updated the driver on another PC with WinXP. However I experience the same issue here. The ADS1232REF connection to the first two boards work (they map as COMX and COMY) but when I insert the next two boards then they become COMX and COMY. This regardless if I change the COMport numbers manually.

Do you think that the driver does not support four boards? Maximum of three boards?

Regarding the blue screen I saw that the user "Giri" had a similar issue:

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/interface/digital_interface/f/130/p/93050/374988.aspx#374988

Do you know if there were some progress in this case?

    best regards,
    /Jens

  • Jens,

Regarding the XP issue, I don't have enough physical connections on my computer to connect four devices.  I would have to use a hub, and I would guess that might be an issue as the driver may only allow only a certain amount of instances through a single port connection.

For example, the USB transfer rate for a USB1.0 device is quite small relative to USB2.0.  So, if you happen to be plugged into a USB1.0 port there may be a limitation on what the driver will allow for connections.  That is just a guess.

The TUSB3410 is not a device that I support, so as you have kind of discovered, you need to communicate with the folks that support the TUSB3410 and ask them how many devices can be connected to the USB port.  So any progress in the case you sited would also have to be directed to that group.

    Best regards,

    Bob B

  • Bob,

I understand, I will check if the USB ports I used were version 1.0 or 2.0.

I will contact the support of TUSB3410.

One final question, I was a little bit confused when you wrote that I was "...using the ADS1232REF beyond the scope to which it was intended".

So what did I do to go outside the scope according to you?

    Best regards,

    /Jens

  • Jens,

The ADS1232REF is an evaluation board and a weigh scale reference design for demonstration of the ADS1232.  It is not meant ot be used as a part of a system, or to be used in conjunction with other ADS1232REF boards.  In other words it is more of a demo of how you might use the part and how to connect it to a MSP430 micro-controller.

    Best regards,

  • Bob,

OK, thank you for your answers.
