AFE0064: Designing with AFE0064 and AFE2256

Genius 15299 points
Part Number: AFE0064
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE2256, ADS8363, AFE2256EVM

Hi Experts,

Good day. We have a raised queries a follows:

1. Can we use 2 AFE0064 ICs to read from a 128 channel input device? If, yes, how do we do it and what extra circuit do we need?

2. If we want to read the output of AFE0064 using a AFE2256, do we need extra ADCs in between ? If yes, which one are suitable for high speed operation and if not, why?

3. The input to our AFE0064 is going to be currents (in nano amperes), both positive and negative. Will that be okay?

4. We wish the scan time of our circuit to be as least as possible. The maximum data transfer rate of AFE0064 is 7.5 MHz. If possible, we would like to achieve this maximum data transfer rate from our device to PC. Can we do that?

5. Do we have any evaluation board for this IC? (probably not have)

Thanks for your guidance.

Regards,
Archie A.

  • Hi Archie,

What I understand is you have a 128 channel current to digital conversion requirement.

You can use two AFE0064 to sense total 128 channels. They can share the digital control signals (IRST, SHR etc.) from the FPGA. The ADC0064 has analog output. It will need external ADC (e.g. ADS8363) for digitization.

the AFE2256 is fully integrated device with 256 low-noise charge integrators followed by high-performance ADC. It can achieve faster scan time at lower power than AFE0064.

    Both, the AFE0064 / AFE2256 can accept bi-direction current.

yes, there are EVMs available for these devices.

More parameters (power, noise, package, speed etc.) need to be considered to select optimal device for your application. There are different tradeoffs to select AFE0064 vs AFE2256 vs any other device from this family of devices.

Kindly note that the AFE2256 is NDA restricted device. So, if you are interested in AFE2256, we can discuss more over email.

  • Hello Shriram.

Sorry for the late update as client just provided his feedback as follows:

"Thank you for the feedback and it was helpful in understanding some parts of the issues I am facing. However, as I have read and tried to understand more about the product, I have stumbled upon a few more questions, and hence would like some clarification on them as well.
    1. Your reply had mentioned that we have an Evaluation board for AFE0064. However, I do not find any mentioned on the website. Can you confirm that again?
    2. I believe I am slightly confused about 'min scan time' and 'max data transfer rate'. Can you explain how can we achieve both simultaneously?
    3. How can we understand the relation between the max data transfer rate of our AFE and the sampling rate of ADC? I understand there are many factors that go into the selection of ADC (SNR, power, etc), but essentially, can you recommend the sampling rate that we would need for max data transfer from AFE?

Just to give you more context: We wish to build a system that scans from a 128 channel detector device at a very high speed (used imaging application). Now, our lab already has an AFE2256EVM board, but need to build a new one that's programmable with FPGA and can be used for any variable of channels in the future. Hence I was looking into this AFE0064, which is quite a state-of-art at this point of time to be used with an ADC, which in turn can be used directly with an evaluation board, or an FPGA. I hope this clarifies our plan and requirements."

    For your guidance. Thank you.

    Regards,
    Archie A.

  • Hi Archie,

Thanks for your reply.Glad to know customer already has AFE2256 EVM and they are looking for some advanced topics.

As further discussions could involve NDA restricted information, can we continue our communication over email? Accordingly, kindly close this thread and let's discuss over email.

  • Thanks, Shriram,

    Initiating a mail for this.

    Thank you.
