ADS1261: Excitation current compliance range

Part Number: ADS1261
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA190

Dear Sirs

I will be using a bridge type pressure sensor that has a very wide bridge resistance range (3.8K to 5.8K).  Typically, the bridge resistance of such devises are temperature sensitive.  With this in mind, I plan on using both the bridge resistance and the bridge output to create a two dimensional curve fit to calibrate the sensor over pressure and temperature.  For stability, I want to use ratiometric measurements using the excitation current through a current sensing resistor, which will be in series with the bridge, as the reference.  Since the reference input has no gain control, I will be using the INA190 current sense amplifier.  Given AVDD is 5vdc, the excitation current output voltage rail is 3.9vdc.  My question is, if in my search for the best excitation current for dynamic range, I create a voltage greater than 3.9vdc but less than the 5vdc supply rail will I damage the ADC?  Thank you for your time.

  • Hi Dennis,

Exceeding the compliance voltage on the current source will not damage the device, however the specified current source accuracy will not be met and it will definitely affect your ratiometric measurement result.

    Best regards,

    Dale
