AMC7836: What is DAC action when DAC output current reach to short current.

Part Number: AMC7836

Hi Team,

I have a question about AMC7836 DAC short current. When one of the AMC7836 DAC output port short to ground or short to ground with a small resistor (2ohm). The source current will reach to current limit.

1. Will all DACs output in one group will collapse?

2. When DAC output current higher than limit, will the DAC output voltage drop and active like a current source?

Thanks.

  • Hi Zhizhao,

    1. Only the shorted channel will collapse to the supply rail (or ground) once the current load is greater than the short circuit limit.  The other channels will not be effected, but it should be noted that the device will be dissipating more power in this condition, which will cause the device to heat up.  If enough channels have a sustained short, you could heat up beyond the abs. max. junction temperature.

    2. The output will act like a current source that is limited to the short-circuit limit.

    Thanks,

    Paul
