TSW1400EVM: TSW1400EVM: DDR memory initialization not complete/interface not ready to use -> LED Off

Part Number: TSW1400EVM

Hello

I am using the TSW1400 EVM together with an AFE5832EVM. After downloading the firmware in HSDC Pro (v 4.7) the User LED 5 (indicates that the DDR memory initialization is complete and the interface is ready to use) stays off. Therefore I get error messages and I am not able to capture data.

I have already tried several suggestions in the trouble shooting section of AFE5832EVM and also measured the clock on the clockline (and at several other points on the testboard) between the TSW1400 and AFE board.
Additional I rised (as mentioned in other posts in the forum) the current limit of my voltage supply up to 4 A.

Here are some pictures of my setup. Meanwhile I switched the jumper JP3 to 3 V but this did not change something.

For the firmware download I choose: C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\High Speed Data Converter Pro\1400 Details\Firmware ADC_FIRMWARE and the ADC file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\High Speed Data Converter Pro\1400 Details\ADC files AFE5832.

Both HSDC Pro and AFE5832 GUI I have installed and run as administrator.

Could it be possible that something on my TSW1400 is broken? Do you have any other suggestions that I could try? I have already posted on the AFE5832 group, but they suggested to post in the TSW1400 group to get some more answers about the TSW1400.

Thank you very much for your help!

  • Hi Maren,

    Thank you for reaching out.

I am sorry to hear about your issue with TSW1400 and AFE5832.

As, I can see, I'm sure you must have tried lot of troubleshooting on this one. At this point we can't say directly that the problem is with hardware or software. So before doing anything else, I'd like you to try the following small experiments first that have worked for me in the past.

    1. Are you using same supply to power the EVM and TSW card? If yes, I'd request you to try with 2 separate 5V DC Supplies and keep current limit high and see if anything changes.

    2. Software:  (keep 2 separate supplies)

    • Remove both the software. First download and install HSDC Pro, then install the EVM GUI. check if anything changes. (the order of installation is important because one program writes some settings in another)
    • Try same but in reverse order.

Let me know if this helps, then we will go a little bit deeper to identify the root cause.

    Thanks & regards,

    Abhishek

  • Hello Abhishek,

thank you very much for your answer.

I have tried both of your suggestions. When I seperate the power supplies, the AFE takes around 1,2 A and the TSW aswell after the firmware has been downloaded. The LED is still off and I cannot acquire data. The current limit is set to 3A (AFE) and 4A (TSW).

Do you have any other suggestions?

    Maren

  • Hi Maren,

    Thanks for doing the experiments.

Do you see LVDS clocks coming? Either way, just to rule out issue with the EVM board, Can you perform a below simple test on your board?

    • Make sure that jumper settings are such a way that AFE uses 40 Mhz crystal clock. You can follow the user manual for exact jumper selection
    • Undock the TSW card. Connect the power supply to AFE board and press the hardware RESET button on EVM.
    • Probe the device FCLK on the test point available on bottom layer.
    • In the default condition, the device will be in 12x serialization mode. You should observe 40 MHz square when probed. If this simple test fails, we can confirm that the board is faulty.

    Best regards,

    Abhishek

  • Good morning Abhishek,

thank you for your suggestions. So did the following jumper settings for the 40 MHz setup:

     and a jumper on J41.

    I mesaured the following frequencies:

    - J54 (GND TP69): 40 MHz

    - TP44: 40 MHz:

    - J40, (GND TP 69): 10 MHz

    - R107 (GND TP 64): 10 MHz directly before the AFE chip

    - FCLK: 5 MHz

    - DCLK: ca. 60 MHz

One other question: USER LED 3 (on) indicates the clock. Is it on when it gets any clock or does the clock frequency matter?

Thank you very much for your help!

  • Hi Maren,

I am sorry I missed your reply. I Just had a look at the waveforms you shared and definitely something is wrong. Your ADC clock cannot be 10MHz and FCLK also doesn't make sense. Could be due to inappropriate jumper settings.

Below is the snapshot of the schematic to put ADC clock to 40MHz. Could you verify you are doing the below changes.

    1. Connect J41 to enable 3.3V to 40Mhz crystal.

    2. On J42, connect jumper to short pin 3 and 5, so that ADC_CLKP is taken from CLKsrc_SE. Also connect pin 4 and 6 so that ADC_CLKM is GND.

    3. No change is needed on J40. since adc clock is now coming from Y1.

    Tests:

    1. probe ADC clk near device. It should measure 40 MHz.

    2. Probel Fclk -> just after hardware reset. It should measure 20 MHz

    3. Probe Dclk -> just after hardware reset. It should measure 240 MHz.

Let me know if you are able to get till this point.

    Regards,

    Abhishek

  • Hello Abhishek,

so basically I should get half of the ADC_CLKP at the output FCLK from the AFE chip? what voltage level shall I measure?

Thank you very much again, I will try out your suggestion as soon as possible.

    Maren

  • One other question: USER LED 3 (on) indicates the clock. Is it on when it gets any clock or does the clock frequency matter?

The results of my measurements are:

ADC clk at J42: 40 MHz, 700 mV

    R107 directly in front of AFE5832: 1,21 V, 40 MHz

    DCLK: ~240 MHz, 1,18 V

    FCLK: 40 MHz, 1,67 V

  • Hi Maren,

I think the EVM is good. The user led just looks for clk and since the EVM is generating the required clks, I think something is wrong with the TSW card.

I would recommend to get in touch with the support team to get it replaced.

    Thanks & regards,

    Abhishek

  • Hi Maren,

Are you able to connect with TI on the TSW support front?

Do you require any other information from my end?

I am closing this thread. If you need any support from my end, feel free to reopen the thread or mail me directly on abhishek.vishwa27@ti.com

    Thanks & regards,
