ADS1148: Replacement Inquiry

Part Number: ADS1148
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1248

Hello Team,

My customer didn't get enough ADS1248 on the market and wanted to replace it with a TI part. They know that the ADS1148 is pin-compatible, the function is nearly the same. As there is no register for chip identification, they have to find another way to manage plug-in compatibility.

Of course, the LSB of a 16-bit ADC is much more than the LSB of a 24-bit ADC. The software which computes the temperature would go wrong. The only difference they found for the read-out is: ADS1248 clocks out 3 bytes of raw data and ADS1148 only 2 bytes.

The idea is to deliver 8 additional clock pulses for ADS1148 and read 8 additional dummy bits (actually the same procedure as for ADS1248). The value of these bits doesn't matter because they are less than a 16-bit LSB, they are only necessary for the software which expects a 24-bit value. Due to the same procedure we achieve software compatibility. The same software for both parts would be perfect for series production. This, so far, is the idea to maintain end product delivery. Also it would be possible to switch back to ADS1248 in the future very easily.

Do you think it is allowed to send 8 additional clock pulses over SPI to ADS1148, or does it cause problems inside the circuit?

Regards,

Renan

  • Hi Renan,

Are you clocking out data by issuing the RDATA command and then 3 NOPs, as shown below in the ADS1248 datasheet?

If so, is your question asking if issuing the third NOP when using the ADS1148 will cause any problems?

If that is your question, then the answer is yes, this should be okay as long as you are only using the first 16 bits of the output data.
