ADS124S08: Channel setup options.

Part Number: ADS124S08

I am using the ADS124S08 in a differential channel configuration.  If I set the reference, gain sample rate and filter type the same for the channels I am using and only switching the input multiplexer between channels to read the channels I need, will the converter run faster if I do not change anything except the input multiplexer or does changing the input multiplexer change the settling time of the converter and make it the longer first conversion value?

  • Hi Greg,

Regardless of running in continuous or single-shot modes changing the settings of the registers will clear the digital filter and restart the conversion.  The first conversion will have some latency.  Depending on the digital filter selected the conversion times are shown in Table 13 (low-latency) and Table 15 (sinc3).  There is a discussion on conversion time in section 9.3.6.3 of the datasheet.

A list of the registers that trigger a restart of the conversion are listed on page 68 of the datasheet within the section on WREG 9.5.3.12.  Also, note that there is the Programmable Conversion Delay (section 9.4.4.3) which is an additional delay.  This delay will be added to the delay times given in Table 13 and 15.

    Best regards,

    Bob B
