BP-ADS7128: Failed to communicate using the GUI

Part Number: BP-ADS7128
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP432E401Y, , UNIFLASH, MSP-EXP432E401Y, ADS1119

I am using the BP-ADS7128 EVM with the MSP432E401Y Launch pad. I have installed the GUI; and moved the jumper from JP6 to JP1 as mentioned in the initial setup.

However, when I try to connect to the device, I get the following error: - 'Error configuring Debug Server: error=Failed to connect to MSP432E401Y device: Please unplug you hardware, then plug it back in and try again

Essentially, I am not able to communicate to the device using the GUI.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong

  • Hello,

This is unusual, would you confirm that the booster pack (the smaller PCB) is connected as shown in the image below.

Also note that the USB cable is connected to the debug port to complete the flash, but connected to the data port to use the GUI afterwards.

    Regards, Cynthia

  • It is connected correctly, please see image above

  • The issue comes up when you are completing steps 3.2 UNIFLASH Programmer for MSP-EXP432E401Y Software Programming, correct?

When  does the error pop up  appear? Directly after connecting the USB cable, without clicking anything on the computer screen, or after step 3, shown below?

    Regards

    Cynthia

  • Hey Cynthia,

Yes, this error pops after I try FIle ->Program device.

    Thanking you

  • I have reached out to our software team to look into any possible changes that may be causing this

In the mean time I would like to try a couple of things.

    1. When you connect the USB to the launchpad, what, if any, LEDs are lit up?

    2. Connect the USB to the data port and provide what occurs, on the computer and the launchpad (LEDs)

    3. Connected to the Debug port, and use the BOOSTXL-ADS1119 EVM GUI <click here> to complete the program flash. provide what happens.

    4. Do you have a new/different launchpad to test out?

    Regards

    Cynthia

  • Hey Cynthia,

    Please see my response below:-

    1. When you connect the USB to the launchpad, what, if any, LEDs are lit up?

    2. Connect the USB to the data port and provide what occurs, on the computer and the launchpad (LEDs) -

     - Connecting to either the Debug or Data port; LED101 is always ON; and LED D3 blinks. The blinking frequency is not consistent - it blinks at 5sec rate; and then at 2sec; and sometime it does not blink at all.

    3. Connected to the Debug port, and use the BOOSTXL-ADS1119 EVM GUI <click here> to complete the program flash. provide what happens. - I get the same 'Failed to connect error'

    4. Do you have a new/different launchpad to test out? - Nope; unfortunately this is the only one I have.

    Regards

    Cynthia

  • Thank you for this information, we were able to replicate the issue and are working on it. The issue seems to stem from a background update on the launchpad that then broke something on our side. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Is there anything we can help address about the device while we try to resolve the issue?

    Regards

    Cynthia

  • Thanks Cynthia. Couple of follow-up.

    1. What would be the tentative timeline on the launchpad issue to be resolved?

    2. Does TI have a CCS project file that I can program the MSP-EXP432E401Y to interact with BP-ADS7128 EVM?

    Thanking you

    Ganapati Pai

  • 1. that depends on the scope of the issue, if our team, in-house, can solve it, then it would be a matter of days. if the scope is too big then it will be addressed by an external contractor, which will be a matter of weeks.

    2. there are steps available to flash the Launchpad using UniFlash. These can be found on the BOOSTXL-ADS1119 BoosterPack User's Guide, page 5, with a link to the software on page 4. I have not tested this method, thus I can not say if it will work. But please let me know what are you findings.

Copy and Paste instruction from User Guide

2.2.2.2 Firmware Download Using the UniFlash Software

An alternate method for downloading the firmware is by using the UniFlash programming software. This tool is useful in case there is an issue using the Program Device option in the GUI software.

2.2.2.2.1 Start the UniFlash Program and Choose the Correct LaunchPadTm

Start the UniFlash program and begin a New Configuration (Figure 11) and select the LaunchPadTm MSPEXP432E401Y. The connection type is automatically chosen based on the LaunchPadTm being used. Verify that the Texas Instruments XDS110 USB Debug Probe is selected and press Start.

2.2.2.2.2 Choose the Firmware File and Flash the LaunchPadTm

The firmware file is located in the folder Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\ADS1119\firmware. Use the Browse button to browse to folder containing the firmware file. The firmware file can also be dragged and dropped into the browse window provided in UniFlash. When the desired firmware is selected, use the Load Image button to load the firmware into the LaunchPadTm. Verify that the firmware installed successfully by checking the Console portion of the UniFlash tool at the bottom of the GUI window.
