ADS8634: How to understand setting Auto-Md Ch-Sel register

Part Number: ADS8634
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS8638,

The description in the datasheet for setting the Auto-Md Ch-Sel register does not make sense. The register is an 8-bit register with every other bit a channel select bit.

Bit 7: Sel Ch0

Bit 6:  X (don't care)

Bit 5:  Sel Ch1

Bit 4:  X (don't care)

Bit 3:  Sel Ch2

Bit 2:  X (don't care)

Bit 1:  Sel Ch3

Bit 0:  X (don't care)

The description says, "if the Auto-Md Ch-Sel register is programmed to 01100100, then the auto-mode sequence is channels 2, 5, 6, 2, 5, 6...."  No matter how you line up the bits in 01100100, the ones do not line up with all the Sel CHx bits.  If bit 0 is left-most bit, then Sel Ch3 is selected, then don't care bit 2 is selected, and Sel Ch1 is selected. If bit 0 is the right-most bit, then don't care bit 2 is selected, Sel Ch1 is selected, and don't care bit 6 is selected.  I see no way to select channels 2, 5,and 6, from the example register setting.

  • Hi Steve,

Thank you for your post. Definitely there is an error on this page of the datasheet. The register data should be 00100110 to select channel 2,5, and 6. I believe the register definition for Auto-Md Ch-sel register on this page is correct and the bit 5 is used to select channel 2, the bit 2 is used to select channel 5, the bit 1 is used to select channel 6.

    Best regards,

    Dale

  • First, the ADS8634 is a 4-channel device. How can channels 5 & 6 ever be selected.  So actually, even though I'm in the ADS8634 section of the datasheet, the example setting, as corrected by you, is really for the 8-channel device, ADS8638. Now it all makes sense. Thank you.
