DAC5688EVM: Driver for GUI via USB Not Working

Part Number: DAC5688EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC5688, CDCM7005

I have installed the S/W from both the CD and the web and the DAC5688 driver shows up as "Other devices" DAC5688 driver unknown.  I am using this attached to a TSW1400EVM board which seems to be working ok.

I am plugging the 2 USB connections into an HP Windows 10 machine.  The DAC5688 GUI Status window says

DAC5688 EVM not detected.

Check your connections and press the USB Reset button. If the program persists, power-cycle the board.

I have pressed the reset, power cycled the board and unplugged/plugged in the USB cable.  Any idea how I can fix this issue?

  • Hi Richard,

One of our experts will be in contact with you shortly. However, something you can try in the meantime is to download the program from FTDI called FT_Prog (link here). This allows programming/reading back of the FT245's internal EEPROM, which is used for identifying these EVM's. If after clicking on the magnifying glass icon there is no devices listed with a product description of DAC5688, then it's likely the internal EEPROM has degraded due to shelf-life. We've noticed this happening on some of our older EVMs and the only solution is to replace the FT245RL part and reprogram. Please let us know if you do find the DAC5688 in the FT_Prog software. This would mean there is something else going on, however my guess is leaning to the EEPROM shelf-life issue. Thanks.

    Regards, Chase

  • I had the chip replaced but the DAC5688 Board is still not producing a clock at J17 when I run the example program.  It is a constant HI.

  • Hey Richard,

In the EVM software under CDCM7005 registers what values does it have displayed for the registers? (right portion of the screen).

In addition if you go to the output tab make sure Y3 output is "Active".

    Regards,

    Matt

  • I reinstalled (3rd time) the DAC5688 EVM Control S/W and now things seem to be working.  Below is a screen shot of the CDCM7005 registers.

    Thanks for your help!

  • Hey Richard,

Just want to confirm you're able to see an output on the J17 connector now? This software unfortunately was built back in the days of Windows XP but we are in the process of porting the older EVM software over to make it more Windows 10/11 friendly.

    Regards,

    Matt

  • Yes, I am able to see the clock now.  The DAC5688 GUI and the TSW1400 GUI both seem to be a bit unstable and I really need to check that they are working correctly before taking any measurements.  Hopefully the Windows 10 versions will fix that.
