DAC81404: Layout: Split analog and digital ground?

Part Number: DAC81404

Hi,

I would like to understand better when and how to use split ground planes for layout using the DAC81404.
In the datasheet, a split ground plane with a single connection is recommended.

In this other post it is stated that a single solid ground plane is OK.

In my design, I have a +/-14V supply connected to AVDD & AVSS.
I have also a 5V supply which is connected to IOVDD & DVDD.

In this case, would it be an improvement to separate the ground planes?

Thanks,
Marcel

  • Generally, I recommend a grounding strategy as described by Henry Ott (good person to look up for EMC and grounding).  Basically, you layout the board with a different AGND and DGND, taking care to place components in their ground plane and ensure that all ground pins had a good return path to the supply source.  Once the board is completely routed, you then unify the grounds into a single plane.  This ensures that any accidental or difficult return paths are optimized.
