ADS1230: For single ended measurement

Part Number: ADS1230
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1232, ADS1120, ADS1220, ADS1118

Hi, Can ADS1230 be used for single ended measurements with gain of 64 and 128 ? I looked  at the datasheet and on page 10, it says can be used but when I look at common mode input voltage range ,it is AGND+1.5V to AVDD-1.5V. Please clarify.

  • Hi Deepali,

Unfortunately you cannot make single-ended measurements when using the ADS1230 due to input range restrictions of the PGA.  I think that this may have been a copy/paste error from the earlier ADS1232 datasheet that does allow single-ended measurements when configured for a gain of 1 or 2 (but not at a gain of 64 or 128).  The ADS1232 is a 24-bit, 2-channel device but is otherwise very similar in operation.

Another device that may be of interest is the ADS1220 (24-bit) or the ADS1120 (16-bit) which has a PGA bypass mode where you can use a gain of 1, 2, or 4 in the bypass mode when the input is connected single-ended.  Also the ADS1118 (16-bit) has the capability of single-ended measurements with a positive full-scale range of 256mV when measuring single-ended.
