DAC7311: Max output current

Hello TI team,

I am using DAC7311 in my design, and the DAC output sources a 100µF capacitor and a variable load.

My question is what happens to the DAC output current when a large load is applied to its output - the output current is limited by the short circuit current? or it might exceed the short circuit current and reduce the output voltage?

Hi Avihay,

The output will be in short circuit condition while it charges the capacitor. The output is likely critically dampened an will not continuously oscillate, but it might ring. I recommend that you insert some series isolation resistor to help with stability and ringing (and help limit the current). A value of >10ohms would be a good fit.

I would like to know specifically for the safe operating area and conditions. Can we short the DAC output? Is it within the safe operating area of the component? Is it influencing the lifetime or MTBF?

Hi Avihay,

Operating at the short circuit current will damage the device only if the maximum temperature is also being violated as a result, which can effect the lifetime.
