ADS1298 and galvanic bareer

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1298

Hello!

I am wondering on galvanic barrier implementation with ADS1298. Should I put all optocouplers and isolated voltage regulators between ADS1298 and microcontroller to isolate both analog and digital part? ADS1298 does not provide any galvanic isolation between analog and digital part, so the barrier on the analog side is not enough although different ground planes? Are there any recommendations for such isolation?

Thank you and best regards from Poland :-)

  • Hi Tomek,

The easiest way to do this would be to use a device like the ISO7241A.  That is a 4-channel isolator that provides three channels in one direction and the fourth the other way across the isolation boundary - this make it easy to implement an isolated SPI type interface.  Since the ADS1298 won't provide isolation itself, the ISO7241A can isolate the micro controller side of things.

  • Thank you Tom! I have also found some other solutions based on ADS ADC documents:  CPL2400, HCPL2460, IL711, but most of them are single/dual and inverting output. Your solution seems to be best integrated (only one circuit) and cheapest one. This seems to be the best solution, there is even 150MBps version at DigiKey and Farnell named ISO7241MDW (22ns) or little slower ISO7241CDW (42ns), not only 1MBps, so it beats them all :-)

Thank you once again and best regards from Poland! :-)
