ADS1278-SP: ESD diode on OUTPUT pins

Part Number: ADS1278-SP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1278

Can you confirm that all ADC digital input and output pins have ESD protection diode to both Ground and IOVDD? The datasheet says max 10mA on INPUT, so what is the current limit on the ESD diodes on OUTPUT pins if they do exist?

  • Hello Su Zhang,

Yes, all digital inputs and outputs have an ESD structure and the maximum current limit is +/-10mA for inputs and outputs.

If you exceed the IOVDD supply by +0.3V or exceed DGND by more than -0.3V, then you will forward bias the internal ESD diodes and current will flow through the pin.  As long as you limit this current to a maximum of 10mA, then you will not damage the device.  However, if current is being forced through the ESD diodes, then proper operation of the ADS1278 cannot be assumed.  After removing the fault, you should reset the device by either asserting the SYNC pin or fully power-cycling the device.
