ADS1278-SP: ADS1278-SP

Part Number: ADS1278-SP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADCPRO

Although the test eval board has non-rad hard components, we plan to shield all the components except the device under test (ADS1278-SP) with Pb brick.

This Pb shielding will prevent radiation effects on the components in the proximity of the DUT.  Will this not work?

I didn't get an answer for the second question regarding the test program available from TI to test this device.

  • Hello Ravindran,

If you shield the non-rad hard components, then you may be able to run radiation tests on the ADS1278-SP engineering sample that is mounted to the board.  However, TI does not recommend using the engineering samples for any kind of radiation testing, and any results that you obtain from these tests will not necessarily apply to QML rated devices.

Texas Instruments Engineering Evaluation Units versus MIL-PRF-38535 QML Class V Processing

Texas Instruments Engineering Evaluation (/EM and -MPR) samples are intended for engineering evaluation only. While using the same die as fully qualified and processed space-grade products (QML Class V or TI -MLS), they are processed to a noncompliant flow (for example, no burn-in, and so forth) and are tested to a temperature rating of +25°C only. These units are not suitable for qualification, production, radiation testing or flight use. Parts are not specified for performance over the full military specified temperature range of –55°C to +125°C or for operating life.

In addition, if you would like to use the ADCPro software to collect data, you would need to remove the MMB0 data capture board from the ADS1278EVM and then connect both boards using jumpers to isolate and shield the MMB0 board from any radiation.  This may or may not work reliably since the EVM was not designed or intended to be used with long wiring connections between the MMB0 and ADS1278EVM boards.

TI does not have a test program available for any kind of device testing.
