TPS51215A: Light Load Auto Skip Mode

Hi,

Am I correct in understanding that by increasing the L constant from Equation 3 on p12 of the TPS51215A datasheet, the Iload(LL) point at which the auto-skip mode is entered can be lowered?

Also, am I correct in understanding that by decreasing the L constant, the auto-skip mode is less likely to be entered even at light loads?

Thanks,

Conor

  • Hi Conor,

The ripple of inductor current is 2*Iload(LL). Therefore, when Iload=Iload(LL), the valley value of the inductor current reaches zero. If the output current continues to decrease, the inductor current will be intermittent and the chip will enter the light load mode. However, the value of the inductor is limited and it cannot be reduced infinitely. Generally, we need to ensure that the inductor current ripple is 0.2~0.5 times the maximum output current.

    Hope this is clear. Thanks.
