DDC114: Do I have to use buffers when connecting DDC114 to a MCU(e.g. RP2040)?

DDC114 EVM uses buffers to connect digital pins of DDC114 to FPGA of DDCMB.

Are the buffers indispensable even if DDC114 and an MCU (or FPGA)  have the same digital levels?

If YES, what are their roles?
